Welcome to Old Crow!
A remote region, the northern part of the
Yukon
is home to the community of
Old
Crow and of the First Nations group the
Vuntut
Gwitchin. Located north of the Arctic Circle on the Porcupine River, Old Crow
is accessible only by plane, with no road access. The traditional way of life
continues up north with the people relying on the porcupine caribou herd that
migrate in the area for food and medicine. Modern facilities and services are
also available including a fitness centre, health clinic, educational institutions
and a general store. Established as a result of a land claims settlement, the
Vuntut
National Park offers skiing, hiking and canoeing adventures, and can be reached
by flying into Old Crow and then via boat. The closest road is the
Dempster
Highway, the only route that crosses the Arctic Circle, located approximately
175 km (109 mi) away. Travellers can admire the alpine tundra landscapes that
line this roadway.
